Vibe Data — How AI Is Redefining Data Literacy

I built a complex enrollment management spreadsheet in three minutes using ChatGPT. The kind of sophisticated what-if scenario modeler that typically takes me an hour or more to build from scratch — input cells for enrollment targets, conversion rates, and program capacities; dynamic calculations that would model different scenarios; a dashboard that would clearly show the impact of various enrollment strategies. A few minutes later I had a working version. When I asked for refinements, I had version 2.0 a few minutes after that.

The interesting part was what the moment revealed about data work.

For years, we've preached the importance of data-driven decisions — but not everyone could actually execute. The barrier was technical: people had the insight, but we expected them to write formulas, build models, and wrangle spreadsheets before they could even ask the right questions.

That barrier is dissolving. AI now handles execution. The real opportunity is teaching school professionals how to think with data, not how to build with it.

I've been calling this "vibe data" — and it changes how we approach data literacy for K-12 school administrators.

When I successfully prompted ChatGPT to build that enrollment spreadsheet, I was able to do so because I have years of experience building these models. I know what questions matter, how data should flow, and what makes a dashboard actually useful for decision-making. That's what data literacy means now.

For years, we've made data literacy synonymous with technical proficiency. That has actually been a barrier — keeping too many from leveraging data effectively. The paradigm is dissolving before our eyes.

Data literacy in the AI age isn't about memorizing VLOOKUP syntax or building nested IF statements. It's about developing the ability to articulate what you need data to do for you. It's about understanding:

  • What questions your student data can actually answer

  • How to structure your thinking about scenarios and variables

  • What makes a dashboard truly useful for decision-making

  • How to communicate your analytical needs clearly to AI tools

We have an opportunity to democratize strategic data analysis in a way that seemed impossible just a few years ago.
